Sustainability Strategy

Banif, SA regards sustainability as an essential element of its core business, and therefore as being crucial to both growth and risk management, as well as serving as a distinctive feature and a factor in wealth creation.

Our sustainability strategy has growth out of a structured process with participation from all sectors of the company. The aim is to enable us to face the new risks posed by a changing society, to advance the cause of progress and social well-being and to encourage more environmentally friendly procedures, through our activities, products and services.

This approach also involves a policy of arts and sports sponsorship and support for social welfare charities.

In line with a policy of transparency and accountability, the Banif Financial Group issues, for the third consecutive year, a Sustainability Report regarding the year 2009.

This describes the efforts of Banif, SA in the field of sustainability in 2009 and its commitments for the future.

Social Welfare

Banif has pursued a number of projects in this field, supporting organizations involved in welfare and humanitarian work.

In 2005, the bank's communication campaign was based on presenting support for social charities as a fundamental part of our mission. For each account opened, Banif donated 5 euros to Fundação do Gil, Acreditar and to a project organized by SIC Esperança, "Um sorriso não tem idade".

In April 2006, Banif organized a benefit concert at the Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon, with Rui Veloso, Ala dos Namorados and an orchestra conducted by Rui Massena. The ticket receipts went to the three charities supported by the Banif Solidário campaign.

Arts

Banif's arts sponsorship activities in Madeira include the Zarco Prize, instituted by the Diário de Notícias da Madeira and Banif, awarded to a leading local figure for his or her contribution to the artistic, literary or scientific life of Madeira.

In the visual arts, Banif organized the Banif Painting Prize, in 1994 and 2003, with support form the Centro Nacional de Cultura, to mark the 5th and 15th anniversaries of the founding of the bank. The prize was awarded for previously unexhibited work by Portuguese painters.

Mention should also be made of Banif's support for publication of the work of a number of writers. A long list of works has already been published with the bank's sponsorship.

Sport

Renewal of the advertising contracts between Banif and Madeira's top sports clubs has been a central priority for the bank which has sought to cooperate with the region's best known institutions, thereby involving itself with different sectors of the region's society whilst at the same time achieving nationwide projection of its image.

    - Marítimo da Madeira Futebol, SAD

Banif became the official sponsor of Marítimo da Madeira football team in 2002. The club will advertise Banif's name on the shirts of its main football team through 2009/2011 seasons.

In 2006, Banif signed a new contract for a further three seasons, through to 2009/2011, with Clube Desportivo Nacional. Under the agreement, Banif is exclusive sponsor of the club's professional football team, as well as supporting its youth and amateur teams.
